PUBLIC INQUIRY

Staff at FRO have received a couple of separate notices from the ADM and her assistant, regarding staff feedback. The ADM offered to address staff comments and complaints, while the DM is working on a way to do the same.

This, as a matter of principle is good news. However, let’s bring back some history and read between the lines:
At FRO, complaining about something has always been a joke. You complain to the Director or the ADM about a service or manager’s abuse and your letter will end at the manager’s desk! The next day, you see that the manager avoid saying “Hi” to you. And because managers have their own friends within their teams, with whom they consult about confidential issues, you end up being looked down even by their friends.

In other words, when you comment or complain, the Director who is supposed to discretely investigate the issue, prefers taking the shortest cut possible: She tells the manager and accepts his/her version only. The hell be with the plaintiff staff! He/she is only a call center agent anyways, while managers are the policy makers, the problem solvers and the program saviors.

There are documented examples of this in the different departments of FRO and this blog has received quite a few.

Now, here’s the question: Will the current ADM come up with a different policy to address staff comments or is it going to be the same old autocratic method that has created clans within FRO and still impedes work to be done properly? How will she address the fear of repression within staff, which results from complaints.

As to the DM, history also shows that she receives complaints and relies on the Director to investigate for her. The Director, again, meets with the specific manager and advises him/her that so and so has submitted a complaint. They decide what to report to the DM. The DM office may send a response, which you already know. You also know that you will be targeted by that manager and you feel the percussions of daring to complain the very next day!

Why doesn’t the DM send external investigators? Does she lack resources or creativity? Is this the way an Executive of the Government of Ontario, in charge of the Ethics, is supposed to deal with staff?

In an attempt to undermine staff fear of repression, which is widely known, the DM also asked staff to use the Intranet to contact her without having to include their names!!!!! How can you send a message from your government computer to the DM office and via the Intranet, without her knowing who you are?

You must be joking, Ms Lucille!
You must find a better way to guarantee the confidentiality of staff comments and complaints, which end up in cafes and restaurants. Find a better way to investigate staff issues and get these managers-idiots to stop their ruling attitude.

The DM and her assistant are of course trying to turn staff away from using the Blog, and we, the blog team, don’t have a problem with that at all, as long the alternative is credible and serves the best interest of the staff.
This blog has been a safe way to comment and complain and has played so far a unique role at FRO.

Yes, some managers still behave the same old unethical way i.e dating FRO staff, spending hours chatting or eating out on the government time, etc. Their stupid purpose is to show a challenging attitude to those who commented on them in the blog. We know they will continue to do so as long as the Director protects them. The sad thing is that their attitude does not only challenge the unhappy call center agent, it is a challenge to a whole system that was created so many years ago to serve and protect the best interest of Ontarians.

There should be a public inquiry against these managers and their Director.

Maybe a different government will address this better.

  1. True, many can't talk because they're scared, so they just accept reality. I think a comment box is a safe way to deliver messages to the ADM.
Anyways, a public inquiry is really too much although I agree with most of the content. Let's see how we can get some harmony in the office.

  3. DM is welcome to comment in the blog comment box instead.
Do you really think the intranet is an alternative to FRO problems, i dont think so.

  4. I agree with the comment box idea. Maybe one secure box in the mail room of each floor.

The Intranet would only work if enough assurance for non prosecution is provided by the Minister. IT looks like they're looking for any skip goat these days.
Last year, My relation with my manager (He is no longer part of FRO)became so tense when I complained about him. Nobody was there to help me. I report to a different manager now, but I already lost faith in the system. I don't complain anymore. I just do my work and go home, but I have a lot to say about this shit hole called FRO....Maybe I'll write a book about it when I retire!

  5. I'm sure a lot of us read this blog and think is a great tool, glad the insults are down and issues are discussed more in-depth.

keep up the good work, I'm sure Mgmt and everyone in the ranks are also alert, good!!

they have a mechanism ( alot of people ) to review our comments and think of ways to react, but reprimend with actions against employees should not be one of them, take the good and discard the bad, lets move forward.

This blog is a good tool to release our frustrations including Mgmt and their friends, family and others hired by afinity.

Advise: Don't kill the opposition, as it will grow stronger.

  8. I don't mean to dig into this suspension matter and I respect others’ privacy but for the record only, The suspended colleagues are 1 manager 1 FO, 1 admin, 1 ESR all from 4th floor + 1 ESO from the 7th floor but he only got 1 week suspension. Pretty sad.

Yes, I agree. We should support them by not commenting on the matter itself or why/how they've been suspended.

  9. FYI, another ESO from the 4th floor is also suspended.
Regardless of what the allegations are or why these suspensions happened, I’m for the right of the ministry to investigate misconducts at FRO as long as disciplinary actions are fair and just. I hope the investigation will continue to include all those who breach workplace policies regardless of position, background or title.

  10. Be careful what you wish for

  11. Fair and just investigations!!!! Not at FRO unless some independent audit is in charge. I bet some managers or friends of these managers will never be investigated because of their connections, no matter what they breach.

Did you notice that all the 6 staff members who have been suspended belong to a minority?

YES to investigations and disciplinary actions. NO to singling out. Nobody should be above the law.

  12. I'll wait and see but I know there are at least 3 managers who must be dismissed right away

  13. lets get things clear, the ESO from the 7th floor wasnt suspended for a week?!?!..he had booked vacation time for that week off, months in advance.
This is the problem with FRO, everyone judges based on hearsay, with no evidence.
Hopefully justice prevails, and those who should be dismisseed with just cause wll be daelt with.
hmmmmm....im thinking if maybe someone should go to the media with the real crap managers are upto, maybe as Justice Brownstone said, thats the only way to get something done sometimes......maybe then...the ADM will investigate her managers for real....maybe FRO needs a fire lit under its arse, to have things straightened out there.

  14. Who has been suspended? I was told by my manager about the 4 folks on the 4th being on leave of absence and I haven't heard anybody else. Why is all this people getting suspended? I heard it is a health and safety issue. What is going on?
